The Chowan River is a blackwater river formed with the merging of Virginia’s Blackwater and Nottoway rivers near the state line between Virginia and North Carolina, flowing for approximately 50 miles before ending in the Albemarle Sound. Flowing through mostly swamp land with occasional high ground, the Chowan River grows to nearly two miles wide at its opening to the Albemarle Sound. The river offers excellent fishing for stripers, blue gill, crappie, herring, shad, catfish and largemouth bass. The average depth is 16 feet and the maximum depth is 40 feet around Holiday Island.
The town of Colerain is just a 40 minute drive to the Virginia border, 20 minutes to the historic town of Edenton, and just 2+ hours to Raleigh. Colerain and the majority of Bertie County is comprised of fertile uplands and lowlands, with some large swamps called pocosins, making Bertie County ideal for agriculture. In addition, the timber industry is key to the area. Livestock and the growing poultry industry, which focuses on broiler production, are major contributors to Bertie County’s agriculture base.
